Godzilla 1984: The return of the king of monsters
After nearly a decade's absence, The Return of Godzilla marks the grand return of our favorite kaiju. Directed by Kōji Hashimoto and released in Japan on December 15, 1984, this 16ᵉ opus in the franchise returns to its roots, adopting a darker, more serious tone, as a direct sequel to the original 1954 film.
In this film, Godzilla is awakened by an underwater eruption and once again threatens Japan. International tensions rise, with the USA and the Soviet Union even considering the nuclear option to counter the threat, a decision that the Japanese Prime Minister courageously refuses.
The plot reflects the fears of the time, including Cold War tensions and the dangers of nuclear power.
The introduction of the "Super X", a battleship specially designed to take on Godzilla, adds an interesting technological dimension to the film. The special effects, though dated, retain the charm of models and costumes, recalling the essence of kaiju eiga films. For die-hard fans, The Return of Godzilla is a must-see work that captures the original spirit of the king of monsters, while reintroducing him in a contemporary context.
