The Pink Panther was originally an American detective comedy by Blake Edwards (1963) starring Peter Sellers and David Niven. The “Pink Panther” refers to a pink diamond, the object of investigation by Parisian detective Jacques Clouseau.

The film's credits feature an animated character in the shape of a pink-coated panther. Surprised and seduced by the originality and fun of this opening, combined with Henry Mancini's musical theme, the audience applauded for several minutes at the premiere.

Such was the film's success that the producer, the Mirisch Company, went on to produce nine films, six of which starred Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau.
