The story of Cyberpunk 2077 takes place on Earth in 2077, in the futuristic megalopolis of Night City in the Free State of California. In this dystopian, cyberpunk-flavored futuristic world of poverty and inequality, the influence of megacorporations is predominant - they have taken over from governments and dictate the law - as is that of cyberspace, the "New Frontier" of this era.

In this universe, certain uses of technology have been democratized, notably the addition of cybernetic implants enabling various augmentations of the human body, as well as the use of various synthetic drugs and "braindances" ("sensory dance" in the French version), computer recordings that enable the memories, experiences and sensations of another individual to be relived. Excessive use of braindances is addictive for some enthusiasts, who can lose all self-control and become aggressive. Called "Psychos", these "deranged" individuals - who also often resort to technological enhancement implants - attack "organics". As a result, the MAX-TAC special police force has been formed to neutralize them.

The player takes on the role of V (Vincent or Valerie), a cyber-mercenary who begins his career in Night City during one of three possible short introductions, depending on his origins ("Nomad", "Street Kid" or "Corpo"), leading up to the main adventure in Night City.
