Steven "Steve" Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, was created by writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby. The fictional character first appeared in the comic book Captain America Comics #1, published in December 1940, but with the date March 1941 inscribed on the cover.

Originally conceived as an American patriotic figure in reaction to the Nazi regime, the character became active even before the United States officially entered the Second World War, in December 1941. From the outset of his publication, he was seen as the standard-bearer of his country's democratic values and a defender of the free world against totalitarianism, notably the Third Reich.

Physically fit to the peak of human potential, Captain America is an outstanding fighter, a born leader and an accomplished military strategist. He wears an unmistakable suit inspired by the American flag, and is equipped with a virtually indestructible shield made of an alloy of steel and the fictitious vibranium, which he uses as protection as well as a weapon.

Since the 1960s, Captain America has been a member of the Avengers superhero team (and its various versions), becoming one of its mainstays over the years.

In 2011, Captain America was ranked sixth in IGN's "Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time", second in their "Top 50 Avengers" ranking in 2012, and seventh in their "Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time" ranking in 2014.
