Sonic the Hedgehog, or simply Sonic, is a video game series developed by the Japanese firm Sega since 1991. It features the firm's mascot Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog, battling the series' main antagonist, Dr. Eggman (or Robotnik).

Sonic must usually thwart Eggman's plans for world domination. The first game in the series, published in 1991, was produced by Sega's Sonic Team studio, following a request from Sega for a mascot design; the title was a great success, leading to the production of a number of sequels and helping Sega to achieve the status of one of the most imposing video-game companies in the history of 16-bit consoles in the early to mid-1990s.
