Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool was created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Rob Liefeld, the fictional character first appearing in the comic book The New Mutants #98 in February 1991.

Initially, Deadpool was characterized as a super-villain when he first appeared in The New Mutants series, but also later in issues of the X-Force series. He then evolved into the anti-heroic character he is today.

Deadpool is a disfigured mercenary with a superhuman ability for accelerated healing, which has enhanced his abilities and enables him to perform physical feats. The character is also nicknamed the "Merc with a Mouth", due to his tendency to chat and joke constantly, including breaking the fourth wall (talking to his readers) to humorous effect, and making recurring gags.

Adapted to film, the character appears notably in the X-Men film series, appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) as well as in his own adaptations: Deadpool (2016), its sequel Deadpool 2 (2018) and soon in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).
