Fallout is a series of role-playing video games (RPGs and Action-RPGs) developed by Black Isle Studios and launched on PC in 1997. The license was subsequently taken over by Bethesda Softworks.

Although the fictional setting of the Fallout series is an uchronia set in the xxi and xxii centuries, its retrofuturistic atompunk (en) universe and graphics are influenced by the post-war socio-cultural world of the USA in the 1950s, as well as by the Cold War theme.

The world of Fallout is rooted in the promise of technological progress, but also in the fear of nuclear annihilation, against a backdrop of anti-Soviet paranoia in America against the USSR, and even conflict with Communist China.

Considered the spiritual sequel to the game Wasteland, this series takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States, the world of this fictional universe having been ravaged by a global nuclear war, leading to numerous changes, including the appearance of mutant creatures.

The background story, inhabitants, locations and characters draw many parallels between the various games in the Fallout series, resulting in a historical continuity of the universe thus described.
