Matt Groening conceived the Simpson family in 1986 in the hallway of producer James L. Brooks' office. He had been approached to launch a series of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show, which would be adapted from his Life in Hell comic strip. When Matt Groening realized that animating Life in Hell would require him to relinquish publishing rights, he decided to go in a different direction and quickly sketched a dysfunctional family, naming the characters after members of his own family. For the son, he replaced his first name with “Bart”, an anagram of the English word brat, because he thought viewers would easily make the connection with his first name.
