The Simpsons (Les Simpson) is an American animated television series1 created by Matt Groening and first broadcast from December 17, 1989 on the Fox network. Since 2020, it has been broadcast on Disney+.

The series features the Simpsons, a stereotypical middle-class American family2. Their adventures serve to satirize the American way of life. The members of the family are Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and Homer's father, Abe.

Matt Groening conceived the Simpson family in 1986 in the hallway of producer James L. Brooks' office. He had been approached to launch a series of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show, which would be adapted from his Life in Hell comic strip. When Matt Groening realized that animating Life in Hell would require him to relinquish publishing rights, he decided to go in a different direction and quickly sketched a dysfunctional family, naming the characters after members of his own family. For the son, he replaced his first name with “Bart”, an anagram of the English word brat meaning “bratty brat”, because he thought viewers would easily make the connection with his first name.
