Description

In 1981, Mattel launched the toy range in the United States, then decided to create an animated series to promote it. In 1983, Filmation created the cartoon, which quickly became a worldwide success. The series was followed by spin-offs, remakes and a multitude of derivative products worldwide.

Following the success of Conan the Barbarian comics in the 1970s and Star Wars action figures in the early 1980s, Mattel sought to launch a new range of heroic fantasy toys. As the rights to Conan were expensive, and the universe too violent and adult, Mattel, after an unsuccessful test production, decided to launch a new “barbarian”: He-Man (Musclor), keeping the original molds but subtly changing the design. It also turned out that the children surveyed preferred a blond hero. Mattel had the idea of creating a very broad range, centered not only on its hero, but also on an ever-increasing number of allies, enemies and accessories. Added to this, each blister pack comes with a comic book recounting one of the characters' adventures. With careful packaging (most of the illustrations on the boxes and blisters are superb) and regular advertising, the range was well received from the outset.
