Description

Pikachu is a species of Pokémon from Nintendo's Pokémon media franchise. It first appeared in Japan in 1996, in the video games Pokémon Green and Pokémon Red, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Initially conceived as a secondary character, Pikachu became the mascot of the Pokémon universe after being chosen as the main character in the TV adaptation of the game, alongside his trainer Sacha. Since then, Pikachu has been a recurring theme in the franchise's marketing, to the point of sometimes being used as a metonym.

Pikachu was imagined by Atsuko Nishida of Game Freak and drawn by Ken Sugimori from the sprite of the red and green versions. He was created at the same time as his evolution, Raichu; from the second generation onwards, he also has a pre-evolution, Pichu. Pikachu is of electric type and occupies the 25th slot in the national Pokédex, the encyclopedia that lists the different species of Pokémon.

Considered an icon of kawaii culture and presented by Anne Allison, a professor of cultural anthropology, as the Japanese equivalent of Mickey Mouse, he has become world-famous and reappears parodied in other animated series such as The Simpsons and Drawn Together. It is the most recognized Pokémon in the franchise.
