The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are fictional characters created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984 in the comic book of the same name.

The authors had originally planned a single volume, conceived as a pastiche of comic books such as Daredevil, in a rather bloody style and aimed more at a teenage audience. Given the dazzling success, they launched a long series of comic books.

Several animated TV series followed (1987, 2003, 2012 and 2018). In parallel, five films and two animated features were released between 1990 and 2023.

The series recounts the adventures of four turtles and their master and adoptive father, the rat Splinter, living in the sewers of New York. Exposure to a mutagen has changed the five of them into anthropomorphic creatures of roughly human proportions. Trained by Splinter in the art of ninjutsu, the four mutant turtles battle various threats to the city, and indeed the world, from other ninjas, mutants, aliens, criminals and sometimes even supernatural creatures, all the while trying to conceal their existence from the public.
