SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated comedy series created by animator and former biologist Stephen Hillenburg, which has been broadcast on Nickelodeon since May 1, 1999.

Creator Stephen Hillenburg first conceived SpongeBob SquarePants in 1984, while teaching and studying marine biology at what is now the Orange County Ocean Institute. During this period, Hillenburg became fascinated by animation, and wrote a comic strip entitled The Intertidal Zone, depicting a number of anthropomorphic marine characters, most of whom are currently represented as characters in the SpongeBob series, including SpongeBob, who was initially a secondary character with the appearance of a sea sponge, far from the domestic sponge he is today.
