They first appeared anonymously in 1943 in the animated short Pluto soldat: an officer orders Pluto to guard a gun tower in which two chipmunks are storing acorns.

They again appeared anonymously in Mickey's Tenants (1946) and the Bongo, King of the Circus sequence in the feature film Coquin de printemps (1947), but were not named until the short film Donald chez les écureuils (released on November 28, 1947).

More recently, they have become the stars of the animated TV series Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, where they are more humanized, wear clothes, evolve in a mostly urban environment and are accompanied by new friends: Gadget, Jack and Ruzor.
