In New Orleans in the 1920s, Eudora finishes her job with the wealthy Lebœuf family and prepares to return home with her daughter Tiana to her father. She and her father loved to cook together. They made the best gumbo in town. One day, they dreamed of opening their own restaurant. One night, Tiana asked the shepherd's star to make their dream come true, but her father informed her that her wish could only work halfway, and that the rest depended on the hard work she would have to put in.

Several years later, Tiana is 19 and working two waitressing jobs to save up all her tips in the hope of realizing her dream, to the point where she no longer has time to enjoy life. One day, Tiana's friend Charlotte Leboeuf asks her to make her famous beignets to impress Prince Naveen, who's in town for the costume ball being organized by Big Daddy Leboeuf. With the money from the doughnuts, Tiana would soon be able to buy her own restaurant.
