Donald Fauntleroy Duck is an American fictional character developed, among others, by animator Dick Lundy in 1934 for Disney Studios. His first film appearance was on June 9, 1934, as a duck in a sailor suit, in The Wise Little Hen.
At the start of his film career, this grumpy, angry duck served as a counterpoint to Mickey Mouse's progressively more composed character. He soon became the hero of his own cartoon series. In comics, he was soon surrounded by a large number of new characters and a world of his own, under the pen of great American writer-drawers such as Al Taliaferro and Carl Barks. The importance of the character himself is somewhat overshadowed by the many other characters created in the Disney duck universe, such as his uncle Balthazar Scrooge.
