Description

Transformers is a franchise created by Japanese toy manufacturer Takara Tomy and American toy manufacturer Hasbro. The franchise began with a line of toys featuring robots that could be transformed into vehicles. These robots form two groups, the Autobots and the Decepticons, who fight each other. The franchise has subsequently been the source of comic books, cartoons, video games and films.

In 1983, the first Transformers toys were released in North America, based on two other Japanese toy lines: Microman and Diaclone. Hasbro commissioned comic book writers Jim Shooter and Denny O'Neil to create the fictional Transformers universe. Subsequently, Bob Budiansky, another comic-book writer, created most of the Transformers, giving them names and character profiles. A comic book, published by Marvel Comics, was then released.

A cartoon was produced during the same period by Marvel Productions. It was broadcast and rebroadcast from 1985 to 1989, first on Canal+ and then on Antenne 2 in Récré A2. Very rare reruns took place on La Cinq in the early 1990s.

The series came to two different conclusions: it ended with season 3 in America and Europe, but continued in Japan with the series Transformers: The Headmasters, which was followed by three other series: Transformers: Masterforce, Transformers: Victory and Transformers: Zone.
